1,500 students awarded degrees as UMT holds 14th convocation

Fifteen hundred students graduating in various educational courses were officially conferred degrees as the University of Management and Technology Lahore held its 14th convocation ceremony on Tuesday, November 14.

US Consulate General Lahore Consul General Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau was the guest of honour at the convocation, which was also attended by ILM Trust Chairman Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad, UMT Rector Dr Muhammad Aslam, deans and directors.

In his welcome address, UMT Rector Dr Aslam said the ceremony was a special day for graduates, parents as well as teachers as it marked the successful completion of an important era in students’ lives. He wished the graduates a successful professional life and a bright future. The rector said UMT had a dedicated full time faculty that was striving hard to impart quality education and learning environment to students, adding that educational activities at the institution were further enhanced by the active participation of the faculty and the students in various research projects and international conferences. He said UMT had conducted several key international conferences in 2017 that attended by speakers from around the world, including the US and UK. Dr Aslam said besides education, UMT was also focusing on character and skill building of its students through a variety of co-curricular, extra-curricular, religious, cultural, and sports activities. He said graduating students must not seek respect of their professional peers merely on the basis of their degree, but through their excellent behaviour and professional performance.

UMT 14th convocation

Highlighting the importance of Pakistan and its human resource, Elizabeth Kennedy said the county was not only crucial to the economic welfare and security of the global community, but was also critical to innovation and developing solutions. She said the day represented a tremendous accomplishment not only of the students, but their families as well. Elizabeth said UMT was a truly global institution and the graduates assembled for the event were truly the best and brightest of Pakistan. The US consul general thanked Dr Hasan and Dr Aslam for their leadership and expressed her gratitude on being part of the convocation.

Of the recipients that were awarded the degrees, three were conferred doctoral degrees, 527 were awarded master’s degrees, four students graduated with an LLM, while 715 students were awarded bachelor’s degrees in various fields. Other honours included Patron’s Medal for 14 students, Rector’s Medal for nine students, Rector’s Academic Excellence Award for nine students, Certificate of Excellence was awarded to eight students, Rector’s Award for Entrepreneurship & Innovation was awarded to a total of 15 students, while nine students received gold medals for extra-curricular activities.
