Pakistani Scholars Win ISAC Travel Award

In a proud moment for Pakistan, two female PhD scholars from the Dr Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD) at the University of Karachi (UoK), have been awarded the Young Investigator Travel Award by the International Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (ISAC).

Ms Sidrah Asghar and Ms Rabia Ilyas received travel grants worth 1,000 Euros each to participate in the 33rd International Congress of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (ICC) held in Istanbul, Turkey, from November 3-6, 2024. They were among only nine recipients globally to be honored with this prestigious award.

The congress, organized biennially since 1959, attracted over 400 scientists from 75 countries this year. It served as a vital platform for discussing advancements in antimicrobial chemotherapy and addressing the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance. Among the attendees were 261 poster presenters showcasing innovative research.

A spokesperson from the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, noted that the award recognizes young researchers demonstrating exceptional innovation and promise.

On their return, the scholars were congratulated by Prof Dr Farzana Shaheen, Director of ICCBS, who praised their groundbreaking research and determination. “This achievement not only highlights the quality of research conducted at PCMD but also places Pakistani scholars on the global stage,” she said.

Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University, Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi, and renowned scientist Prof Dr Atta-ur Rahman, Professor Emeritus and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology, also lauded the scholars’ accomplishments.

“This recognition is a testament to their dedication and the potential of young Pakistani researchers to contribute to global scientific advancements,” said Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi.

The ISAC aims to foster international collaboration in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, making the congress a crucial platform for experts and emerging researchers alike.

Ms Sidrah Asghar and Ms Rabia Ilyas have made their institution and country proud, exemplifying the immense potential of Pakistani women in science and research.
