Today marks the beginning of the Journalist Safety Training of Trainers (TOT) Workshop at Forman Christian College University (FCCU) Lahore. Running from May 13th to May 16th, 2024, the workshop is organized by the faculty of Humanities FCCU in collaboration with Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) Norway.

The workshop aims to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure the safety and well-being of journalists in their professional endeavors.

A diverse group of participants from academia and journalism across Pakistan have converged at FCCU for this significant event. Led by Abeer Saady, Trainer, and Media Consultant at OsloMet University, the workshop features notable figures such as Altaf Ullah Khan, Dean of Humanities, and Asma Basharat, Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, both from FCCU.

The inaugural session, held earlier today, was graced by esteemed speakers, including Dr. Jonathan Addleton, Rector of Forman Christian College (A Chartered University). Dr. Addleton underscored the paramount importance of journalist safety in today’s media landscape, setting a profound tone for the workshop.

Following suit, Dr. Altaf Ullah Khan, Dean of Humanities at FCCU, expressed his gratitude to all participants for their commitment to promoting journalist safety. The workshop was formally initiated by Dr. Syed Saqib Saleem, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mass Communication at Forman Christian College, marking a significant milestone in advancing journalist safety practices.

In a historic moment for Punjab University (PU), five Chinese scholars were conferred with PhD degrees during the institution’s 133rd Convocation. The event, held at the prestigious Faisal Auditorium, saw the distribution of 343 PhD degrees, 120 MPhil degrees, 12 Master’s degrees, and 116 BS gold medals among the graduating students.

Presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, the convocation was attended by Registrar Dr Ahmed Islam, Controller of Examinations Muhammad Rauf Nawaz, Deans of Faculties, professors, and a multitude of students and their families.

Addressing the gathering, PU VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood emphasized the critical role of education and research in national development. Highlighting PU’s strides in education, Dr Mahmood shared significant milestones achieved in the past year. He mentioned the university’s impressive performance in international rankings, with 19 subjects securing a place in the QS rankings for the first time. Additionally, Punjab University was recognized as the top institution in Pakistan across various subjects by Times Higher Education.

Dr Mahmood also lauded the efforts to enhance governance within PU, citing regular meetings of statutory bodies to ensure adherence to regulations. He announced the launch of 28 undergraduate, 13 MPhil, and 4 new PhD programs aimed at meeting the evolving needs of the market.

Amidst congratulations extended to graduates, parents, and faculty, Dr Mahmood extended special felicitations to the Chinese scholars who completed their PhDs at PU. Tian Xuefeng, Ren Guangxu, Gu Zhong, Cheng Linsheng in History, and Yung Hee Chun in Pakistan Studies were commended for their academic accomplishments.

The convocation witnessed another noteworthy moment as Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) Lahore’s Medical Superintendent Dr Shoaib Aslam was awarded a degree of MS in Health Administration. In total, degrees and medals were conferred upon 1111 candidates, marking a significant milestone in PU’s academic journey. The event underscored PU’s commitment to academic excellence and its dedication to fostering international collaborations in the pursuit of knowledge.

The Urdu Majlis of Government College University (GCU) Lahore on Monday hosted a seminar in honor of the renowned author Farrukh Sohail Goindi’s latest work, “Main Hoon Jahan Gard.”

The event was attended by the GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, and former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Hassan Amir Shah.

The book not only recounts Farrukh Sohail Goindi’s extensive travels but also serves as a reflection on the societal and political landscapes of the countries he visited, presented through the lens of his rich and engaging narratives.

During the ceremony, faculty members and critics such as Dr. Saima Iram, Dr. Iqbal Shahid, Dr. Saadat Saeed, Dr. Khalid Mahmood Sanjrani, and Dr. Naseem Shahid shared their insights on the book, which features tales from various countries, spanning over four decades. Dr. Farzana Riaz moderated the event.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Shazia Bashir highlighted Farrukh Sohail’s contribution to literature, noting his impressive portfolio of fourteen books, emphasizing that writing travelogues is not an easy task.
