Agriculture Key To Poverty Alleviation, Says PEC Chairman

Agriculture is the backbone of our economy and key to poverty alleviation, Pakistan Engineering Council Chairman Jawed Salim Qureshi said on Wednesday. Addressing the annual convention of Pakistan Society of Agricultural Engineers arranged by Faculty of Agriculture Engineering University of Agriculture Faisalabad, the PEC chariman said collaborated efforts were needed to stand by the farming community, downtrodden segment of the society, and promoting modern and smart technologies in the agriculture sector for increasing per acre yield.

He also called for the need to develop entrepreneurship among engineers keeping in view market and unemployment issues. Qureshi added that PEC would start the Engineering Construction Bank to provide interest free loan to young engineers for their start–up companies that would help address the issues of modern era.

The PEC chairman said the council was equipped to shoulder the responsibility of developing dams if given the opportunity, adding that the country had immense capacity to produce low-cost electricity but “unfortunately we are not tapping the fruits of the potential”.

UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ashraf said the country had to narrow down the gap of industry academic linkages. He said engineers should come up with low-priced agro technology for small holding farms so that per-acre productions could be increased. The VC added that value addition in the agriculture and food sector was the need of the hour to compete with the rest of the world.

Ashraf said in China, Agriculture Department regulated agro zoning and implementation of agricultural reforms and such a model was the prerequisite to fight the challenges of the modern era.
