The Balochistan government on Monday announced the launch of a Rs 4 billion school education programme across the province to provide modern and updated education facilities to students in all schools of the province .
This decision by the provincial government was taken at a meeting of the education department held to review the existing education facilities in schools in the province. The meeting was presided over by Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan. Provincial Education Minister Muhammad Khan Lehri, Additional Chief Secretary of Planning and Development Sajjad Ahmed Bhutta and departmental secretaries also attended the meeting.
For the implementation of the school education programme, a budget of 4 billion has been allocated by the provincial government. Under the chief minister’s initiative, classrooms, toilets, administrative blocks, sports grounds, IT labs and boundary walls etc. will be constructed in all the primary, secondary and higher secondary schools of Balochistan province.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister directed fast-track implementation of the programme and told the officials that he would accept no slackness and wastage of public money by the officials during the initiation and completion of the education drive.
Balochistan’s education sector has been marred by a lack of infrastructure facilities for years, especially schools in the provinces rural areas. According to the Pakistan Education Statistics 2016-17, 1,500 primary schools in Balochistan’s rural areas do not have a building. But things get much worse in schools that do have a building. According to the 2016-17 data, as many as 7,947 primary schools in rural areas of Balochistan do not have the facility of electricity, while 4,836 primary schools in Balochistan did not have the facility of water. Of these, 4,060 lies in the rural areas. Lack of toilets is another deterring factor for school children, and as many as 8,315 primary schools in Balochistan do not have toilets, with 7,180 of these being in the rural areas. Also, 6,032 rural primary schools in Balochistan do not have a boundary wall.
