A brainstorming session on Trend Impact Analysis (TIA) – Pakistan State of Future Index (PK-SOFI) ‘The Future of Possibilities’ was held at the Strategic Vision Institute (SVI) in collaboration with AGAHI in Islamabad.

SVI President and Executive Director Dr Zafar Iqbal Cheema initiated the session, outlined the purpose of the conversation, which was to identify plausible future development that will have an impact on the wellbeing of the people of Pakistan. The Trend Impact Analysis is a continuation of modeling the state of the future of Pakistan; an inaugural report that was published on October 2017 by the Foresight Lab.

Foresight Lab/AGAHI Founder and President Puruesh Chaudhary said without exploring the current possibilities, we will remain stuck in the past, with rhetoric useless for our future generations. Charting the future possibilities focusing on creating newer opportunities by strengthening institutions’ capacity, producing quality futures research and policy designs, Former Air Chief of Pakistan, Sohail Aman presented his views on the applicability of Trend Impact Analysis in decision support system.

Pakistan State of Future Index ‘Anticipating 2027’ indicated a promising future for Pakistan. The report was the first of its kind to be published, developing foresight for evidence-based policymaking and analysed the historical data of selected variables for the previous twenty years, projection of variables for the next ten years defining the best and worst plausible values for each variable.

Participants of the sessions also explored the TIA approach. TIA is a method used for analysing the consequences of future developments by systematically accessing future trends and their possible effects.

Strategic Plans Division Advisor Khalid Banuri presented the synthesis of the developments produced in the participatory discussions. He said that many of today’s burgeoning policy challenges were complex, as they were emerging as a result of the interaction between many intertwined actors and factors in the country.

Former Minister of Defence Lt Gen Naeem Khalid Lodhi said Pakistan has been facing indomitable challenges across all spectrums of wellbeing from governance to economy to security; it would be useful for the country, if enough attention was given to talented relentless group of people in the domains of artificial intelligence and futures, he added.
