The federal government led by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) has decided to resume its landmark laptop awarding scheme under the Youth Development Initiatives for bright students, Academia learnt on Tuesday. According to HEC sources, a budget of 10 billion rupees is being allocated for the scheme and laptops will be provided to students of BS, Masters, MPhil, PhD, Undergraduate (with a limited number), Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), and Virtual University (VU).
For this purpose, the government also established a committee under the supervision of the Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr Mukhtar Ahmad which will finalize all the matters including criteria and others. As per the notification available with Academia Mag, the students will get laptops at the beginning of 2023.
The 14-member committee includes the Executive Director of HEC, an Additional Finance Secretary (Budget) Government of Pakistan, a Member Planning and Development Division, Science and Technology, the Secretary Higher Education Department Punjab, the Secretary Higher Education Department Sindh, the Secretary of Higher Education Department Balochistan, Secretary Higher Education Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a representative from National Information Technology Board (NITB), Secretary Higher Education Department Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Representative of Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), Representative of office Prime Minister of Pakistan, Project Director/ Secretary Committee Youth Laptop Scheme HEC Pakistan and a co-opted member.
According to the notification, the steering committee will review when and how to start the youth laptop distribution program and lay down the rules and procedures. The committee will review the budget and timeline of the said scheme and recommend the team for technical and non-technical support in the project; the steering committee also has the power to reject or accept any proposal.
