Former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and seasoned diplomat Sardar Masood Khan underscored the socio-economic progress of AJK while advocating for intensified development efforts to uplift the region’s people. Speaking during an interactive session with researchers from the Centre for International Strategic Studies Azad Jammu and Kashmir (CISS-AJK), Masood Khan reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Kashmir cause.
“Since our liberation from Dogra rulers in 1947, AJK has made remarkable strides in economic and social development. However, we must do more to improve the quality of life for our people,” said Khan during his keynote address.
He commended the visionary leadership of AJK’s founders, emphasizing the transformation from a state with minimal infrastructure to one that now hosts five universities, 11 regional campuses, three medical colleges, and over 100 colleges. Highlighting the literacy rate in District Poonch, which stands at an impressive 85%, he applauded the region’s educational progress.
Masood Khan also reflected on the advancements in infrastructure since 1947. “From a single dirt road connecting Muzaffarabad to Srinagar, we now have a robust network of roads linking even the remotest villages to major cities across AJK and Pakistan,” he noted.
He called for unlocking AJK’s untapped potential in hydropower and tourism, citing its abundant natural resources and scenic beauty as key assets for economic growth. “Our region holds immense promise for generating clean energy and attracting tourists, both domestic and international,” he said.
While celebrating progress, Khan urged policymakers to remain attuned to public needs and concerns. “Bridging the gap between elected representatives and the electorate is crucial for sustainable development,” he remarked.
On the Kashmir issue, the former president reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the right to self-determination for the people of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK). Expressing concern over diminishing international focus, he stated, “The abrogation of IOJK’s special status in August 2019 briefly drew global attention, but the issue has since faded due to the pandemic and political challenges within Pakistan.”
The session also included remarks from Dr Asma Shakir Khwaja, Executive Director of CISS AJK, who praised Masood Khan’s leadership and contributions to the Kashmir cause. A detailed presentation highlighted the institute’s research achievements and advocacy efforts.
The event concluded with Dr Khwaja presenting a souvenir to Masood Khan as a token of appreciation for his enduring efforts to advance AJK’s development and champion the Kashmir cause.
