Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa criticized the media’s misuse for personal attacks, stating, “The easiest job is to hurl abuse at the Chief Justice.” His remarks came during a Supreme Court hearing concerning the appointment of permanent vice-chancellors at public sector universities, specifically focusing on Samina Malik, Rector of the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI).

The three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Isa, addressed Malik’s absence from court and university meetings, citing health issues. The court raised concerns about the authenticity of her medical certificate, which was issued under the name “Samina Rashid,” different from her official name, leading Chief Justice Isa to question its validity.

Malik’s lawyer, Rehanuddin Golra, defended her by stating that she was genuinely unwell due to back problems, but a tense exchange ensued as the Chief Justice highlighted inconsistencies in her attendance and questioned her reliance on online participation instead of in-person meetings. Golra claimed Malik attended other online meetings but was absent from only one.

Chief Justice Isa expressed frustration over Malik’s repeated health excuses, asking if her position as rector was still warranted. He pointed out the delays in important university decisions due to her absence, asking, “If she is unwell to this extent, why should she remain in the post?”

During the hearing, the court ordered Malik to appear in person, and she arrived in a wheelchair. Chief Justice Isa admonished her for avoiding meetings, indicating her excuses had become a pattern and questioned the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for allowing this situation to persist. He sarcastically asked, “Is there only one woman in all of Pakistan who is always sick?”

The court also condemned the growing trend of media manipulation, with Chief Justice Isa noting that some journalists are paid to attack judges and public officials. He emphasized the need to hold individuals accountable for these attacks, questioning whether the Supreme Court should start issuing contempt of court notices to deter such behavior.

In his closing remarks, Chief Justice Isa urged the federal government to decide on Malik’s future as rector and called for action against manipulated media narratives damaging to the judiciary and public figures. He stated, “This is about setting a precedent for accountability in public institutions,” as the case highlighted broader issues like administrative shortcomings in public sector universities and the need for transparent appointments.

The hearing concluded with Chief Justice Isa ordering Malik’s removal from the courtroom after she requested more time to respond due to medication needs. The court will continue to monitor the situation regarding her position. Samina Malik was appointed as the first female Rector of the IIU in August last year.
