Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed authorities to expedite the construction of Punjab’s first government-run autism school in Lahore. The initiative aims to ease the financial burden on parents of children with autism by providing free treatment and specialized care.
During a recent meeting, the chief minister reaffirmed her commitment to improving special education facilities across the province, declaring that “special children are our special heroes.” With the project now in its final construction phase, the school is expected to be completed within a year.
Expansion of Special Education Initiatives
In addition to the autism school, the Punjab government has established 10 autism units in various special education institutions across the province. Special Assistant Sania Ashiq has been assigned to oversee the construction process to ensure timely completion.
To further support differently-abled students, the government has distributed 9,206 assistive devices, including hearing aids, wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and white canes. Additionally, 35 schools have been upgraded, and 28 special education institutions are being transformed into centers of excellence to enhance learning opportunities.
Curriculum Development and Employment Opportunities
A specialized curriculum for students up to grade 5 has been introduced, incorporating a translated version of the Holy Quran for hearing-impaired children. Furthermore, skill-based courses for special students are in development. To enhance employment prospects, the Punjab government is planning a job fair in collaboration with private institutions.
As part of these initiatives, 900 students have registered so far, with 25 securing jobs and 14 students completing the first batch of the Special Education Vocational Matriculation program. Additionally, 586 students from special education centers have successfully transitioned into regular schools.
Infrastructure and Sports Development
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has also announced Punjab’s first grand sports gala for special students. Meanwhile, eight new special school buildings have been completed, with approval granted for the construction of nine more. A screening tool for slow learners has also been introduced in special education centers to better address their needs.
This initiative underscores the Punjab government’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment for children with special needs, ensuring they receive quality education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
