In a groundbreaking move to combat air pollution and address the smog crisis in Lahore and other cities of Punjab, Chief Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi distributed 10,000 cost-effective electric motorcycles (e-motorcycles) on Tuesday. The initiative, part of the provincial government’s broader strategy, aims to encourage sustainable transportation and reduce the environmental impact of traditional fuel-powered vehicles.
The distribution event, held in Lahore, witnessed the Chief Minister handing over e-motorcycles to students and professionals from diverse fields. These recipients include Punjab secretariat employees, government and private sector workers, as well as individuals with disabilities. The vehicles will be made available through interest-free and manageable installment plans, making them accessible to a wider range of individuals.
Chief Minister Naqvi, addressing the gathering, highlighted the severe air pollution issues faced by Punjab and underscored the importance of adopting eco-friendly transportation alternatives. He expressed confidence that the distribution of e-motorcycles would significantly contribute to mitigating the smog crisis and improving air quality in the region.
In addition to the e-motorcycles, the Chief Minister announced plans to distribute 10,000 electric rickshaws, further promoting sustainable commuting options. The move aligns with global efforts to shift towards electric vehicles and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
To encourage a faster transition to electric vehicles, Chief Minister Naqvi disclosed that the government would exclusively purchase e-bikes instead of petrol-run motorcycles. Drawing parallels with the success of electric vehicles in China, he urged the public to embrace this eco-friendly shift and contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.
In a bid to alleviate financial burdens on citizens, the Chief Minister extended the current driving license fees until January 15, providing relief to individuals during the transition period. The comprehensive approach taken by the Punjab government reflects a commitment to addressing environmental challenges and fostering a sustainable future for the province.
The distribution of e-motorcycles and the government’s plans to introduce electric rickshaws mark significant steps towards reducing air pollution and promoting eco-friendly transportation alternatives in Punjab. The move is expected to set an example for other regions in Pakistan, encouraging the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and contributing to a cleaner and greener future.
