For the implementation of a uniform education system in Punjab, the provincial government has decided to formulate a curriculum authority, as per the sources. Under this new initiative, five subjects will be made compulsory up till matriculation, and all the government and private educational institutes will take exams of these compulsory subjects only.

According to sources, private educational institutes may teach additional subjects as well, but examination will be organised for five compulsory subjects only. Sources added that the new education system will be implemented from 2020 academic session.
Previously, the Punjab government had decided to revert the medium of instruction to Urdu in all primary schools of the province.

The announcement was made by Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar on his official social media account. In his post, he said that learning in our mother tongue will save the valuable time of our teachers and teachers, as previously they used to translate topics of curricula from English to Urdu. This wasted more time on translation instead of comprehension, adding that pupils failed in learning something new in the process.

Buzdar revealed that a survey was carried out by the provincial school education department in 22 districts of the province. Several students, teachers and parents were asked about the medium of instruction. Over 85 percent respondents said that Urdu should be made the medium of instruction at schools. According to another report, 45 percent school children in the province were unable to write simple sentences and read simple passages in Urdu and English languages, respectively. A report released by Idara Taaleem-o-Agahi highlighted that only 89 percent children of 6 to 16 years were in schools, and the percentage was 86 in the previous year.
