A seminar was held at the Government College University Lahore on World Alzheimer’s Day to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and discover strategies to combat them. Alzheimer’s is a condition that falls under dementia, a condition that impairs people’s mental health capacity.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi chaired the seminar which was also addressed by eminent researchers, doctors and psychologists including Prof. Dr Athar Javaid, Dr Ali Hashmi, Dr Hussain Jafri and Alzheimer’s Pakistan President Zia Haider Rizvi.

In his address, Prof. Dr Athar Javaid, the former President of Pakistan Society of Neurology, said that in 2020, one dementia patient was reported every third second.

Dr. Ali Hashmi from King Edward Medical University Lahore said that this disease is mostly found in people over 65 years of age.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Zaidi said that Dementia Students Society is established at GCU which will work for awarness about this disease in the Society. Students and faculty will also become Dementia Friends under the guidance of Alzheimer’s Pakistan.

Alzheimer’s Pakistan Secretary General Dr Hussain Jafri said that according to research, the costs on dementia treatment are much more than other diseases.

Zai Haider Rizivi said that to get rid of this disease, we must take effective care of the elderly people.

At the end of the function, the students of GCU Dramatics Club also presented a play on Alzheimer’s.
