DOW University of Health Sciences (DUHS) organized a workshop on Self Defense and Pink Ribbon Awareness under the Institute of Business and Health Management, Green Youth Movement initiative, and Directorate of Sports.

In the quest of maintaining the tradition of Dow University, always assuming the social responsibility of spreading awareness regarding fatal diseases and empowering women at the same time by organizing a Women’s self defense workshop.

Community Service & Sustainability Society of the Institute of Business & Health Management (IBHM), the Green Youth Movement Club along with Sports Directorate of DUHS  together put in efforts to meet  the following Sustainable Developmental Goals: Goal #03 Good Health and Well-being-Pinktober,2022. SDG#05 Gender Equality, equal rights for women to live a life free of fear from societal abuse. SDG#11 Sustainable Cities and Communities with women empowerment SDG # 17- Partnerships for the Goals – Three major sections of DUHS come together as a team for the achievement of the goals.

As part of the awareness campaign,“Pinktober-2022”, the occasion highlighted the burden of breast cancer for which Pakistan is playing a vital role, including the public service message through dial tunes that all those making phone calls get exposure to for awareness. Further on, pdf e-pamphlets for the significant highlights of this cancer will be shared (to support paperless sharing).

Sports and physical activity is a huge stress reliever; therefore, active lifestyle is the key to reduced risk of breast cancer. In this era of mental pressure and frustration the venting out of tension is a must demand for health and peace. Hence the spiritual training by the trainer, Mr Anwer, president Pakistan Martial Arts Association (PMAA) and his team during the workshop was highly pertinent to the Pinktober theme.

The workshop was graced by the presence of Regional Director and Director Sports,  of HEC Mr Javed Memon , and Pro Vice Chancellor DUHS Prof Dr Nusrat Shah.

Prof Dr Nusrat Shah emphasized on the significance of the psychological empowerment of women followed by physical, financial and mental empowerment. Engr Javed Memon encouraged the participants to participate in the physical activities as well as be confident in their inner strength.

He further shared the details of sports. He appreciated the motivation of the DUHS sportsmen and sportswomen for assuming the responsibility to host the HEC All Pakistan inter varsity chess championship for males and Archery championship for females. The workshop commenced with an ice breaking disarmament act by Prof Dr Nusrat Shah and Director Sports.

The presence of Prof Dr Nusrat has been a moral booster for the participants as she passed on her positive energy by her active participation. She insisted the participants and audience to stay active and resilient. She acknowledged and appreciated the organizing team on arranging this workshop.

The workshop included self defense training through practical demonstration and physical exercise, as well as spiritual training on how to believe in yourself as a strong person!

The best performers were presented with gold medals and certificates besides the participation certificates. The trainers were presented with gold medals while Director HEC and Pro Vice Chancellor were presented with shield as token of appreciation.

DUHS has been committed to the community and  that such sessions will be held frequently.
