From Dress Codes to Drug Bans: New Classroom Rules in Sindh

The Sindh Education Department (SELD) has rolled out a strict code of conduct for teachers in schools across the province. Under the new rules, female teachers have been advised to avoid heavy makeup and high heels, while male teachers must steer clear of casual wear like T-shirts and jeans. Female educators are encouraged to opt for traditional attire with minimal accessories.

In addition, the department has banned the use of narcotics, gutka, naswar, mawa, and smoking on school premises. Teachers are also barred from assigning personal tasks to students, maintaining a clear boundary between professional and private responsibilities.

In a major cleanup effort, the department uncovered around 5,000 “ghost teachers”—employees drawing salaries without performing their duties. Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah has ordered their removal from payrolls and approved disciplinary action. New teachers will be hired from merit lists to fill the vacancies.

This follows last year’s crackdown when district education officers (DEOs) were told to stop salaries of over 1,000 absent teachers. A Scrutiny Committee report submitted in October 2025 confirmed widespread teacher absenteeism, prompting the province to take stronger action against fraudulent employment in schools.
