DUET students stage protest demanding hostel facility and withdrawal of fee hike

LinkedIn

The students of Dawood Engineering and Technology University on Thursday demonstrated protest in front of the varsity’s main entrance, demanding hostel facilities and withdrawal of the fee hike.

Later, the protesting students staged a sit-in and chanted slogans against the university administration. However, police and paramilitary forces dispersed the protesting students from the site of the protest. A number of the protesting students told The News that recently the varsity has raised fee while enough space where hostel facilities could be provided is under the use of paramilitary force. Whenever the students raise voices for their legitimate rights, the university administration uses police against them.

The students were also demanding that the DUET administration should provide extra transportation points for the convenience of students. They were also demanding that the nonfunctional labs should be activated immediately.

A student who was willing for mentioning his name said that the out-station students of the DUET have no accommodation space on campus despite the varsity administration had promised them that they will be provided accommodation in the varsity hostel.

“The out-station students are residing in various parts of the city. Due to the unavailability of transport on several roots, they hardly reach the varsity for attending their classes. And sometime the students miss classes.  Therefore, varsity management should provide them hostel facility that is already available”

The protesting students said that if the varsity administration didn’t fulfill their demands, they extend the scope of their protest and there will be a hunger strike in front of the university’s main entrance.

DUET spokesperson Muhammad Kashif told that the varsity has not increased the fee structure while there is space on-campus where the outstation students could be accommodated. The space where the paramilitary force resides was part of the varsity, but it was not a hostel. And they have been there even before the DUET was functioning as a college. This part was never a student hostel.

He said that vice chancellor was ready to listen to the protesting students. But they demonstrated protest without informing the university administration. He said that all the labs are functional while the transportation points have been increased on busy roots.
