Elected representatives of PU call on Dr Mukhtar Ahmad

A delegation of the elected representatives of Punjab University (PU) Lahore, in continuation of the ongoing dialogue with the highest officials/ decision makers, held a meeting with Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, the Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC), in Islamabad.

The delegation comprised PU Syndicate Dr Asghar Iqbal, Dr Muhammad Islam, Secretary PUASA Dr Amjad Magsi, and Prof Dr Muhammad Nasir. The delegation raised significant concerns about the teaching community related to HEC.

During the meeting the following agenda items were discussed at length: New/ Rational Service Structure for the teachers of the public sector universities, including both BPS & TTS. A comprehensive draft was presented by the elected representatives to the Chairman in this regard.

Simplification of the evaluation process for the promotion/ selection of the University teachers to the following grades. Financial/ administrative problems are faced by the universities’ centers in general and PU in particular. Reservations of universities’ teachers on HEC’s policy regarding research journals. Issues related to the evaluation of PhD dissertations.

The Chairman of HEC responded positively and assured to resolve the issues at the earliest, and a breakthrough is expected soon. He appreciated the concrete proposals presented by the delegation regarding the service structure and agreed to include those in the final draft under consideration by the HEC.

He stressed maintaining quality and good governance in the Universities and showed concerns over the unnecessary expansion causing a deep financial crisis.
