The United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada are generally regarded the top study destinations around the world. But did you know that in recent years, various changes have taken place that have made Germany most popular study destination not only in Europe, but in the world. Besides having a host of great universities in almost every discipline, Germany also offers one of the best life experiences to a young, studious mind.

The number of international students in Germany has doubled over the course of years, with an increase of seven percent in foreign student enrolments between 2016 and 2017. Germany holds the best education infrastructure of the world and is home to 396 state-recognised higher education institutes, of which 181 are university-equivalent institutions.

To sum it all up we have compiled a list of five main reason that make Germany most popular study destination for students across the globe. Time to dig in.

Almost No Tuition Fees

While private universities are mostly sponsored or financed through the tuition fees received from students, public universities in Germany charge no or little tuition fees for undergraduate and graduate degree programmes. This prospect is available for both national and international students. However, students are required to deposit yearly administration and semester fees, depending on the university requirements. Some of the leading tuition-fee free universities in Germany include Ludwig Maximilian University, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Humboldt University of Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, University of Hamburg and University of Stuttgart.

English As Language Of Instruction

44203916 7Germany is a non-English speaking country with more than 80 million German speakers in their population. However, the majority of universities in Germany now offer undergraduate, graduate, doctorate, research fellowships and online degree programmes in English. Universities offering courses in English include Hochschule Mannheim –University of Applied Sciences, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Berlin International University of Applied Sciences, Bremen University of Applied Sciences, Jacobs University, Technische Universitat Munchen, University of Gottingen, Max Planck Institute, Freie Universitat Berlin, Technische Universitat Dresden, Technische Universitat Berlin, and TU Darmstadt, just to name a few. Course choices available for international students in English include agriculture, art, engineering, languages, law, medicine, sports, cultural studies, social sciences and natural sciences. As of the 2018-2019 academic year, a total of 108 bachelor’s, 883 masters and 178 PhD programmes were being taught in English at leading German universities. So language is no longer an issue if you plan to pursue your higher studies in Germany.

Abundance Of Scholarships

Germany offers a wide array of scholarship options for international students, under the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) – the German Academic Exchange Service, and Deutschlandstipendium. World Class Universities

Germany is home to some of the best universities in the world. Thriving Economy

Having the fourth biggest economy in the world and the strongest in Europe certainly makes Germany an excellent destination for post-study job prospects. The country has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the European region, which makes working in Germany an attractive option for current and prospective students. Non-EU/EEA students can work for 120 full days or 240 half days annually while they study. Internships are mandatory for students and are regarded as normal work, even if they are unpaid. Students can earn around €450 (tax-free) on a monthly basis. Earning more than this amount can lead to automatic tax deductions from your salary. However, while education can be attained in English, having good knowledge of the German language and completing an internship during your studies is vital for securing a good job on a long-term basis.

Students from non-EU countries after the completion of their studies can extend their residence permit for up to 18 months to find a suitable job. To apply for the extension a student needs a passport, university degree certificate or official document from your university, health insurance and financial means to support your stay in Germany. After finding a suitable job, the student can apply for German residence or EU Blue Card and can live and work in Germany. The minimum salary criteria to apply for the EU Blue Card is at least €49,600 annually.
