GCU 119th Annual Sports Conclude Following Colourful Ceremony

The three-day 119th Annual Sports of the Government College University Lahore concluded on Friday with a colorful ceremony at the university’s Oval Ground. The closing ceremony was held after various Gymkhana events in which a large number of students, faculty members, GCU staff members, old Ravians and guests took avid part. The delightful and keenly contested events included Cricket Ball Throw, Girls Chatti Race, Staff Children Race, Wheel Barrow Race, Musical Chair and Old Ravians Handicap Race.

Lahore Walled City Authority Director General Kamran Lashari was chief guest at the Gymkhana events that was attended by a large number of Old Ravians and their family members. About 5,000 students and teachers took part in more than 66 sports competitions at GCU annual sports gala.

Mariyam Yasin of Physical Education Department won the title of Best Female Athlete of GCU for her extraordinary performance in various sports competitions. Ali Haider, another student of Physical Education Department was declared the Best Male Athlete. The most enthralling event of tug-of-war was won by the team VC X1 that beat a team of Old Ravians.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Hassan Amir Shah said GCU sports was the most colorful and exciting events in the life of Lahore. He congratulated the winning teams, saying that promotion of sports ultimately curbed the inclination of youth towards negative activities and deterred them from getting swept off their feet by retrogressive forces.

Appreciating the participation of elderly Old Ravians in the university’s sports gala, Kamran Lashari said old was certainly gold, saying the bond with GCU only grew stronger as you got older. GCU Director Sports Khadim Ali Khan also addressed the prize distribution ceremony.

Earlier, Amna Ashraf and Sehar Riaz won Chatti Race and Cricket Ball Throw, while Tehmina was triumphant in the Musical Chair. GCU Athlete Ali Raza won the Obstacle Race, the most difficult competition of the day. Farhan Ahmed crossed the finish line first in the Sack Race.
