Two faculty members of Government College University (GCU) had been served with show cause notices for criticizing administration over WhatsApp group.

The notices were served to Professor at Institute of Industrial Biotechnology Dr Hamid Mukhtar and Assistant Professor History Department Saeed Butt.

The notices reads the reason behind being served was “clear-cut instruction regarding use of social media for the employees.”

The notice Prof Hamid stated, “Since you have been replaced from the position of Head of Department by the Competent Authority and you are continuously maligning and defaming the high-ups/officials and the executive officers of the university.”

While notice of Saeed Butt stated, “It is learnt that you have been involved in subversive activities on social media (despite the clear-cut instruction regarding use of social media for the employees) since your case in being dealt by the Anti-Harassment Committee and you are continuously maligning and defaming the high-ups/ officials and the executive officers of the university.”

Dr Hamid Muktar said that he just shared his point of view on a certain issue in WhatsApp group of GCU Academic Staff Association (ASA), which was meant to discuss the issues and problems of the faculty.

This is a clear-cut case of victimisation and targeting the faculty, he added.
