Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) has launched a grand three-day Book Fair, bringing together over 25 national and international publishers to foster a culture of reading. The event aims to encourage students and the academic community to develop a passion for books, reinforcing their significance in a progressive society.
The fair features an extensive collection of books, including literary, research, religious, academic, historical, and contemporary works, catering to the diverse interests of students, researchers, and book enthusiasts. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for attendees to purchase books at discounted prices, helping them build personal libraries despite financial challenges.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, GCUF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Rauf-I-Azam emphasized that developed nations thrive on knowledge and education, and Pakistan must foster a reading culture to keep pace with global progress. He urged students to engage with books beyond their curriculum, highlighting how literature broadens perspectives and strengthens intellectual growth.
Publishers at the event raised concerns regarding trade restrictions on books from India, which have led to increased costs for importing books from other countries. They urged the government to lift these restrictions to ensure that educational materials remain accessible to all.
Chief Librarian Tariq Latif affirmed that the book fair demonstrates GCUF’s dedication to supporting students in acquiring knowledge despite economic challenges. He noted that the event provides a valuable opportunity for students to access affordable textbooks and non-academic books.
The overwhelming participation in the book fair defies the misconception that book culture is diminishing in Pakistan. Attendees stressed that while book fairs are instrumental in reviving the reading habit, government initiatives and policy support are crucial to sustaining this momentum.
