GIK Institute And China’s Harbin University Agree To Enhance Collaboration

The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology and Harbin Engineering University (HEU), People’s Republic of China have signed an agreement to further collaboration in the field of science and technology.

The decision was made in a meeting held between a delegation of HEU and GIKI. The Chinese varsity was represented by College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering Vice Dean Prof Qiao Gang and GIKI Rector Jehangir Bashar represented GIKI.

The meeting considered various avenues for collaboration, including studies on glaciers, climate change, artificial intelligence, robotics, sonar imaging, technology, under water applications and use of smart technology in hydel power related projects.

The two sides also discussed matters related to exchange of students and faculties, and joint research in various areas.

The Chinese delegates briefed their Pakistani counterparts about their prowess in water-related research, including underwater acoustics, saying the experienced could be shared for the benefit of Pakistan as it had immense potential in hydel power generation.

Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan (SOPREST) Executive Director Shakil Durrani and Pro-Rectors of GIK were also in attendance.

Durrani, who remained chairman WAPDA, informed the Chinese delegates about the continuous sedimentation in Tarbela Dam, causes erosion of storage capacity and identified it as one of the possible research areas for scholars in both varsities.

The two sides agreed that a mechanism for follow-up and implementation plan of workable ideas would be created so that the discussed collaborations can be turned in to action.
