Good governance is an important factor for sustainable development and without implementing it the dream of sustainable socio-economic development can never be fulfilled.

 

The discourse of good governance has received great attention in contemporary global scenario especially in recent years. In this context, the study of good governance has become very important in the literature of political science, administrative sciences, and development studies.

 

These views were expressed by the Chairperson Department of Political Science, University of Karachi, Professor Dr Samina Saeed on Thursday. She was addressing the seminar on ‘peace building through good governance and suitable development’ held at the department’s Dr Manzoor Din Hall.

 

On this occasion, the Dean Arts and Social Sciences Professor Dr Nusrat Idress shared that in the absence of democracy, peace, and good governance, sustainable socio-economic progress is not possible. She mentioned that for developing societies particularly for Pakistan there has been an added emphasis on human development in recent years.

 

She observed that the seminar would help the students to understand the importance of good governance and how it could bring sustainability in societies and how we can build peace through good governance.

 

Other speakers included Dr Muhammad Ali from Department of Political Science, Dr Ghazal Khawaja Hummayun of Department of Public Administration, Dr Erum Muzaffar in-charge Pakistan Study Centre, Dr Asma Tabassum Manager Research Operations and Development, Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization, Dr Muhammad Kamran Khan Students Advisor Department of Political Science highlighted the role of media and education in promoting civic engagement for peace and development and importance of youth empowerment for better governance and peace building.

 

While discussing the role of youth in the development of the country they said that the establishment of law and order and good governance play an important role in running the government.

 

They mentioned that through awareness the law and order in the country can be established with the help of good governance and said that the government and society have to play a mutual role in this regard.

 

They said that Pakistan is our homeland and we have to take necessary measures to run its affairs smoothly and it is the responsibility of every member of the society to strive for peace and order through good governance. The speakers further said that the main reasons for the destruction of societies are the lack of good governance. They shared that through quality education we can create awareness among the masses.
