The government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a significant investment of £190 million (approximately Rs 54 billion) for the development of educational infrastructure in Pakistan. The funds, originally linked to the conviction of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, were recovered by the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and will now be utilized to advance education in emerging technologies and improve accessibility in underserved areas.
The previous administration under Imran Khan had used these funds to settle private liabilities, a decision that played a role in his 14-year prison sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust case. However, following the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s approval, the current government has redirected the funds towards educational initiatives aimed at fostering modern learning environments.
One of the key projects under this initiative is the establishment of Daanish University, alongside the expansion of the Daanish Schools Initiative. The university will function as a trust and will also include a 20-bed hospital, enhancing both educational and healthcare opportunities in the region. The government aims to complete all projects within 18 months.
The Daanish Schools Initiative is focused on providing quality education to financially disadvantaged children, ensuring equal opportunities for both boys and girls. Admissions will be based on financial need and parental circumstances, aiming to bridge the gap between privileged and underprivileged students. The schools will feature modern curricula, technology-driven learning modules, and recreational facilities.
To ensure the effective implementation of these projects, a committee led by Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal has been tasked with finalizing the school programs. Additionally, a steering committee under the direct supervision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will oversee the transparent allocation and proper utilization of the funds.
The government has emphasized that these investments reflect its commitment to uplifting the education sector, especially in marginalized communities. The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in equipping Pakistani youth with essential skills in science and technology, contributing to the nation’s long-term socio-economic development.
