Around 92,000 students have received scholarships on merit under the PM’s Ehsaas Undergraduate Scholarship Program, the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib said on Thursday.
The students who belong to lower-middle-class families have received higher education through this scholarship that is the most important part of the Prime Minister’s Ehsaas Program. It has provided free education facilities to thousands of male and female students studying at different public sector universities of the country.
The minister, on Thursday, said through his Twitter account that the Ehsaas Program of the Prime Minister is fulfilling the dreams of students, belonging to low-income families, about getting higher education in the universities. In another tweet, he further explained that they have received around one lac, twenty-two thousand, seven hundred and forty-four scholarship applications from all around the country including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. He said that they will scrutinize the applications by June 22 and award scholarships to the male and female students from four and five years graduation programs.
However, Prime Minister has also ensured the transparency of the selection for the scholarships through the scholarship complaint portal. On February 17th, PM Imran Khan visited the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) and inaugurated the portal. The purpose of this portal is to make sure that the scholarships are being awarded purely on the basis of merit. People often have complaints that the scholarship awards are not granted on the basis of merit so this step sounds like the right initiative to address people’s problems. This portal will create a centralized system to deal with all the issues related to scholarships and to make sure the transparency of the process. More or less the scholarship complaint portal is similar to the citizen portal where the concerns of students will be addressed efficiently.
Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of scholarships and such platforms in the life of students. He said that it will help them focus more on their studies.
In Pakistan, there are countless people who are not able to afford even subsidized education. Though these scholarships are a great initiative for students to get higher education, it is not enough for the number of people who are unable to afford their education expenses. There should be more opportunities for people to let everyone have the basic right to education and to increase the literacy rate of Pakistan.
