All government schools and educational institutions in Islamabad will now operate on Saturdays, following the authorities’ decision to eliminate the weekend day off.
A notification from the Ministry of Education (MoFEPT) announced that starting August 10, Saturday will no longer be a holiday for government educational institutions in the federal capital. This change aims to enhance educational outcomes and maximize instructional time.
The notification also mentioned that two extra classes, one for Language and one for Mathematics, will be held on Saturdays. However, attendance for these additional classes will be optional for students.
In June, sources reported that the federal government was considering ending the Saturday weekly off to restore a six-day work week in government offices. Insiders had indicated that the Cabinet Division sought recommendations from all ministries, which would then be submitted to the federal cabinet for the final decision on the weekly offs.
The move has elicited mixed reactions from parents, educators, and students. Some believe the additional day will help students improve academically, while others are concerned about the potential increase in student and teacher fatigue.
The Ministry of Education has assured that the decision will be monitored closely and adjustments will be made if necessary to ensure it benefits students’ educational experiences.
