Punjab Higher Education Minister Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz has said that a bill for restoration of student unions will be introduced in the Punjab Assembly and will be passed by the assembly.

The minister Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz, however, said that the student unions were banned because of their politicization. Therefore, he said, student unions could not be restored.

He was speaking to media at the inauguration ceremony of 13th IEEE International Conference on Open Source Systems & Technologies (ICOSST 2019) at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore.

He said that student unions would be restored so that they could work for the betterment of students. He said, for this purpose, ‘student government’ would be introduced and a proposal was under consideration.

He said that for student government, a fund would be established, which would be spent on the welfare of students. “Our government wants to bring about a positive change in the lives of students,” the minister said adding that a guidance centre would also be established this academic year. This guidance centre would provide guidance to students on career counselling, scholarships and job placement, he said.
