Swedish Teen Climate and Environmental activist Greta Thunberg has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her global climate change campaign, popularly known as the “fridaysforfuture”. Her name was put forth by three Norwegian lawmakers who acknowledged her efforts in encouraging other youngsters to protest against the inaction of their respective governments in relation to climate change, globally.
Parliamentary Representative Freddy Andre Oevstegaard, talking about the nomination with the Norwegian media outlet VG, said: “We have nominated Greta because the climate threat may be one of the most important causes of war and conflict. He applauded Greta for setting a massive movement in motion in favour of climate change, making an important peace contribution.
The 16-year-old activist, who was named as the most influential teens of 2018 by the world-renowned Times magazine, has inspired thousands of schoolchildren to hold strikes across the globe, urging their leaders to take actions against climate change.
According to a UN report, global temperatures could possibly rise by 1.5°C by the end of 2030. Scientists have warned that this figure will have dire implications to the planet and natural habitat, only if the greenhouse gas emissions continue at the same rate.
In 2018, Greta Thunberg addressed the U.N. Climate Change Conference held in Poland, where she criticised the lawmakers and government organizations for their failure to act. In January, while ending her speech at the World Economic Forum meeting held in Davos, Switzerland, she silenced a room full of leaders by asking them to behave like their house was on fire because it was.
Tens of thousands of youngsters as part of her movement #FridaysForFuture will be skipping their schools to march for climate change, this Friday. The movement will take place in almost 100 countries across the globe. “I think we are only seeing the beginning. I think that change is on the horizon and the people will stand up for their future”, Thunberg said in her exclusive interview to the Guardian.
Fridaysforfuture movement was launched by Greta in August 2018. Through this movement, Greta protested against the Swedish government and urged them to introduce changes on the lines of Paris climate agreement.
Greta said the success of the strikes were driven by the fact that climate science was becoming more candid. “I think we have reached a tipping point where enough scientists are telling it like it is and not being so afraid of being alarmist,”, Greta added.
However, Greta Thunberg expressed her disappointment that a lot of discussion about her movement centred upon children themselves rather what was needed to initiate climate-based actions by the government. “They talk about our age, our looks and so on. The emissions are still rising and that is all that matters. Nothing has happened, that is crucial to remember.”
