In a shocking incident on Tuesday, unidentified gunmen targeted the vehicle of Dr Samreen Hussain, the Vice-Chancellor of Dawood University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), in Orangi Town. The attack occurred during a ceremony at a girls’ college celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day.
Dr Samreen, who is also the wife of senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Dr Asim Hussain, was unharmed in the attack, along with her staff. According to Express News, the assailants fired two shots at her vehicle, which was parked within the college premises in Sector 11. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the incident.
SSP West Hafeez Bugti confirmed the attack, revealing that the initial investigation suggests it was not a case of street crime but something more significant. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen arrived in a white car, with one individual entering the college grounds and directly targeting the Vice-Chancellor’s vehicle.
In the aftermath of the attack, Dr Samreen recounted how the college staff swiftly moved her to safety once the shots were fired. The swift response helped prevent any injuries.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has taken immediate notice of the attack, ordering a detailed report from DIG West. He emphasized the urgency of implementing a stronger, coordinated security plan for high-profile individuals and directed law enforcement agencies to expedite the arrest of those responsible.
The incident has sparked concerns about the security of educational institutions and prominent figures in Karachi, with authorities now under pressure to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly.
