On Wednesday, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) orchestrated an event to bestow the Best University Teacher Awards for the year 2022 upon exceptional faculty members from Pakistani universities. These educators were recognized across three broad categories: Life Sciences & Medicine, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Social Sciences & Humanities.
The annual initiative of the HEC, the Best University Teacher Award, is designed to acknowledge outstanding university instructors and encourage them to enhance their teaching and mentorship skills.
Dr. Syeda Salma Hassan of Government College University, Lahore, Dr. Kamran Khalid of Fatimah Jinnah Medical University, Lahore, and Rafia Mumtaz of the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) emerged as winners of the Best University Teacher Awards 2022 in the respective categories of Social Sciences & Humanities, Life Sciences and Medicine, and Physical Sciences and Engineering.
The ceremony was presided over by Chairman HEC Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed and attended by Executive Director HEC Dr. Shaista Sohail, Advisor Academics Engr. Muhammad Raza Chohan, Vice Chancellors from various universities, faculty members, and numerous students.
The awards ceremony also included the presentation of cash prizes and certificates to the winners of the Inter-University Essay Writing Competition.
In his address, Chairman HEC Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed referred to teaching as a noble profession and encouraged faculty members to fulfill their duties with dedication. He emphasized the importance of both education and youth training, expressing satisfaction at the substantial participation of female faculty and students in the initiatives. He highlighted that candidates from remote regions participating showcased the increasing inclusivity of the country’s education sector.
HEC had also organized an Essay Writing Competition on Pakistan’s 75th anniversary to understand the aspirations of the youth. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed expressed pride in the ambitious dreams of the youth and expressed optimism about Pakistan’s bright future.
Executive Director HEC Dr. Shaista Sohail, in her welcome address, stressed the pivotal role teachers play in educating the nation’s youth and shaping their character. She advised students, privileged to study in esteemed higher education institutions, to excel in their fields and prepare for their roles in Pakistan’s socio-economic progress.
Advisor Academics Engr. Muhammad Raza Chohan provided context about the Best University Teacher Award initiative and its selection process. He mentioned that HEC received 51 nominations and expert committees were instrumental in selecting the winners. He celebrated excellence in both imparting and gaining knowledge.
The winners of the Best University Teacher Awards received a cash prize of Rs. 1 million each. For the Inter-University Essay Writing Competition, the cash prizes were Rs. 500,000 for the first position, Rs. 300,000 for the second, Rs. 200,000 for the third, and Rs. 100,000 for the fourth to tenth positions in both Urdu and English categories.
In the Urdu category, Talha Ijlal from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Saifullah from the International Islamic University, and Lubna Maryam from the University of Gilgit-Baltistan secured the top three positions. In the English category, the top three positions were secured by Syed Haris Nawaz from Abdul Wali Khan University, Muhammad Wajid from the National University of Modern Languages, and Nimra Arooj from the National University of Medical Sciences.
