University athletes under the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan have demonstrated remarkable prowess by securing a total of 233 medals, including 32 gold, 56 silver, and 145 bronze, in various national and international championships during the 2023-24 season.

This achievement highlights the HEC’s unwavering commitment to fostering sports within higher education institutions. Beyond academic support, the HEC has been instrumental in providing athletes with top-tier sports facilities, skilled coaches, and mentors. The organization also ensures that financial incentives, including prize money and scholarships, are disbursed fairly to deserving athletes.

Female athletes, in particular, have made significant strides, earning 17 gold, 25 silver, and 21 bronze medals in national championships, along with two silver and three bronze medals in international events. These accomplishments underscore the growing impact and recognition of women in sports within the academic sphere.

The 34th National Games saw university athletes excel, clinching eight gold, 17 silver, and 93 bronze medals, leading to the HEC team being awarded the prestigious Best Turn Out Trophy. This success is attributed to the continuous support from HEC through the Pakistan University Sports Board (PUSB) and the concerted efforts of the academic community.

HEC organizes Intervarsity Championships throughout the year, engaging students in both physical activities and academic pursuits. Top performers from these championships are selected to represent Pakistan in national and international arenas.

Further enhancing the sports ecosystem, HEC has revised the PUSB Constitution and Rules to improve financial incentives for athletes. Under the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, HEC is also establishing 12 sports academies in public sector universities across the country. These academies will provide round-the-clock access to sports facilities, nurturing young talent and transforming them into professional athletes. A nationwide Talent Hunt drive has also been successfully conducted, promoting sportsmanship, harmony, and team-building among youth aged 15-25 years.

This extraordinary medal haul by university athletes not only celebrates individual and collective achievements but also reaffirms HEC’s role in promoting sports as an integral part of higher education in Pakistan.
