ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr Tariq Banuri, has been removed from his post, a year before the expiry of his term, through an ordinance and notification that reduced his tenure from four years to two years.
It is pertinent to mention here that Dr Tariq Banuri was appointed in May 2018 by the former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for a four-year term and his tenure was due to end in May 2022.
A notification issued by the Establishment Division reads, “In terms of sub-section (5), read with sub-section (5A), of Section 6 of Higher Education Commission Ordinance 2002, as amended vide HEC (Amendment) Ordinance 2021, Dr Tariq Banuri has ceased to be the Chairperson, HEC forthwith and is accordingly removed from the said post, with immediate effect.”
Reportedly, the National Accountability Bureau had also launched an investigation against him for irregularities and appointment of consultants on hefty packages.
Dr Adil Najam, Dean, Pardee School of Global Studies, Boston University, reacting on the removal news commented, “Dr Tariq Banuri is being bullied out by pygmies for trying to mend a broken system. What a travesty .This will further wreck an already shattered system.”

Syed Umar Javed on Twitter said, “Really disappointed to see this notification. Dr. Tariq Banuri was selected on merit by a very competent search committee. His unceremonious departure from #HEC will be a big blow to crucial reforms in higher education.”
