Higher Education Appointments Being Made Purely On Merit, Says Yassir

Key appointments in higher education sector are being made purely on merit and through transparent mechanism, Punjab Minister of Higher Education Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz has said.

He passed the remarks while attending a reception for the newly appointed vice chancellors in public sector universities of the province. The reception at Lahore Gymkhana Club was hosted by American Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS), Inter-University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences (IUCPSS) and University of Education, Lahore.

The Punjab government has recently appointed vice chancellors at five universities, where the top slots were lying vacant since several months. The new appointees include Government Women College University Sialkot Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Rukhsana Kausar, Lahore College Women University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Bushra Mirza, Government College Women University Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Rubina Farooq, Government Home Economics College University Lahore Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Kanwal Ameen and Univeristy of Engineering Technology Lahore Vice Chancellor Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar.

Numerous visiting scholars from the US, including those from universities of Stanford and Seattle, were also among the guests.

During the discussions, Vice Chancellors Committee Chairman Dr Muhammad Ali Shah revealed that a training workshop for the newly appointed VCs would be organised this year, which would be conducted by international experts and senior experienced academics from Pakistan.

University of Education Lahore VC Dr Rauf-e-Azam welcomed the participants and hoped that newly appointed VCs would contribute to the higher education sector of Pakistan positively. The appointees vowed to undertake collaborative steps aimed at improving of quality of teaching and research in higher education. They opined that emerging challenges of higher education sector could be met effectively through close coordination and experience sharing.

Senior academicians, VCs, head of departments at various universities, government officials, senior journalists and members of the Punjab Higher Education Commission also attended the reception.

The participants praised Nadeem Akhtar of AIPS and Murtaza Noor of ICUPSS for providing a platform that helped academics connect with each other.
