The School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS) at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi recently hosted a dynamic one-day workshop, facilitated by the esteemed Social Inequality Lab. The event provided a vibrant platform for distinguished speakers and participants to delve into thought-provoking discussions surrounding the pervasive issue of social inequality in today’s interconnected world.

Dr. Aisha Ghaus Pasha, Former Federal Minister, graced the occasion with her presence, joined by Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director of IBA, and Dr. Asma Hyder, Dean of SESS, who warmly welcomed the attendees and provided an insightful introduction to the mission of the Social Inequality Lab.

In an era where social inequality continues to pose significant challenges across economic, political, and cultural landscapes, there is an increasing need for nuanced understanding and proactive measures to address its multifaceted dimensions. With this imperative in mind, the workshop aimed to explore contemporary perspectives and innovative approaches towards mitigating social inequality.

Distinguished speakers, including renowned academics and economists from institutions such as IBA and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), contributed diverse viewpoints to the discourse. Topics covered during the workshop ranged from spatial inequality and socially desirable fiscal policy reform to the significance of inclusive growth, wealth and wage disparities, regional variances in maternal malnutrition, and inequalities in access to opportunities.

Central to the discussions was the acknowledgment of the pivotal role of economic growth in reducing inequality. By fostering real income growth, enhancing access to essential resources, and creating avenues for socio-economic progression, economic development emerges as a crucial mechanism for lifting individuals out of poverty and broadening their horizons.

Moreover, participants had the opportunity to explore the initiatives and research endeavors of the Social Inequality Lab during a visit to its office. This engagement sparked fruitful discussions on potential avenues for future research and collaborative endeavors aimed at addressing social inequality comprehensively.

Overall, the workshop served as a catalyst for critical dialogue, explored emerging research paradigms, facilitated interdisciplinary exchanges on various facets of inequality, and inspired actionable initiatives towards fostering a more just and equitable society.
