IBA Karachi workshop Ignites Passion for Global Humanities

The recent two-day workshop on ‘Global Humanities Methodology’ sparked intensive discussions among participants, who engaged deeply with the subject matter. Led by Dr Asad Q Ahmed, Magistretti Distinguished Professor of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures and Director of CMES at UC Berkeley, and M Azam Ali, Assistant Professor at IBA Karachi, the workshop was part of the broader IBA-CMES Berkeley Summer School initiative.

This collaborative effort brought together faculty from UC Berkeley and IBA Karachi to provide participants with insightful readings and to explore the challenges and opportunities inherent in teaching Global Humanities in universities. The workshop is an integral component of the three-week Summer School program, which aims to foster a comprehensive understanding of Global Humanities through rigorous academic training.

Participants in the Summer School hail from prestigious institutions, including Harvard University, UC Berkeley, The University of Oklahoma, the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI), the Allama Iqbal Open University, Bahria University, Abdul Wali Khan University, Habib University, and IBA Karachi. This diverse group of scholars is set to undergo extensive training in reading Dars-e Nizāmī texts in Arabic.

Over the course of the Summer School, participants will delve into selected texts covering logic, theology, jurisprudence, law, tafsir, and hadith. These studies will be conducted in collaboration with madrasa scholars, providing an authentic and immersive experience in traditional Islamic scholarship.

Dr Asad Q Ahmed and M Azam Ali’s leadership in the workshop underscored the importance of a nuanced and interdisciplinary approach to Global Humanities. Their guidance was instrumental in navigating the complexities of the subject and in fostering a productive dialogue among participants.

The IBA-CMES Berkeley Summer School continues to be a beacon of academic excellence, bridging gaps between Eastern and Western scholarship and promoting a deeper understanding of the Global Humanities.
