Imran Khan’s GCU visit draws ire among political opponents

The former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to one of the most prestigious seats of higher learning Government College University (GCU) Lahore is being criticized widely by his political opponents, demanding strict action against Vice Chancellor GCU Dr Asghar Zaidi for inviting Khan.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan visited GCU on Monday, where he addressed the ‘Taleem Aur Hunar Sath Sath’ Orientation Drive seminar. Although Khan delivered a political speech while addressing a gathering of students at GCU’s historic Oval ground, the Vice Chancellor Dr Asghar Zaidi confidently defended the visit and speech of the former Prime Minister.

The event was also attended by Former Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood, Provincial Minister for Higher Education Department (HED) Punjab Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz, Punjab Information Technology (IT) Minister Dr Arslan Khalid, Senior Provincial Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal, Former Federal Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar, Former Punjab Finance Minister Hashim Jawan Bakht, GCU Lahore Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Asghar Zaidi, Information Technology University (ITU) VC Dr Sarfraz Khurshid, PITB DG e-Governance Sajid Latif, Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) Chairman Badar Khushnood, Enablers CEO & Co-Founder Saqib Azhar and GFXMentor Founder Imran Ali Dina.

Soon after Imran Khan’s speech, he lashed out at his political opponents, including Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar, and Mariam Nawaz Sharif; his political opponents started tweeting, criticizing him for political speech in an educational institution.

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) leader Mariam Nawaz also tweeted, demanding strict action against Vice Chancellor. At the same time, the Governor Punjab Baleegh ur Rahman also took notice of Khan’s visit to GCU and HEC de-nominating Dr Asghar Zaidi from the Vice Chancellors Selection Committee.
