The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore marked a significant milestone today with the inaugural ceremony of its MSc Hydropower Engineering Program at the Center of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering (CEWRE). The event was graced by Chairman WAPDA, Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani, as the Chief Guest, alongside Vice Chancellor Dr Shahid Munir.

The program, designed to address the growing need for specialized expertise in hydropower, will see 25 WAPDA officers pursue their MSc degrees at UET. This collaboration aims to equip WAPDA employees with advanced skills and knowledge, strengthening the organization’s capacity to manage and expand Pakistan’s hydropower projects.

During the ceremony, Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani underscored the critical role of hydropower in addressing Pakistan’s energy challenges. He emphasized the importance of the program in preparing skilled professionals who will contribute to the success of under-construction dams and energy projects. “The students of this program will play a vital role in alleviating Pakistan’s power crisis,” he stated.

The Chairman also praised UET’s contribution to Pakistan’s development through engineering education and research. He expressed confidence in Vice Chancellor Dr Shahid Munir’s leadership and vision for advancing the university’s academic and research initiatives. “UET engineers have consistently driven progress in the country, and I am optimistic that this legacy will continue to flourish,” he added.

Following the inaugural proceedings, Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani, along with Dr Shahid Munir and other faculty members, toured UET’s SPARCO and Nanotechnology Labs. The Chairman commended the university’s state-of-the-art facilities and advanced research capabilities, highlighting their potential to foster innovation.

The ceremony was attended by Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Nasir Hayat, Chairman CEWRE, Deans, and Heads of various departments. Dr Shahid Munir, in his address, reiterated UET’s commitment to advancing education and research in hydropower engineering, aligning with the country’s growing energy demands.

The MSc Hydropower Engineering Program is expected to serve as a cornerstone in bridging the skill gap in Pakistan’s energy sector, with the first cohort of WAPDA officers set to lead transformative change in the industry.
