  • Indian students across the country take to streets to protest Citizenship Amendment Bill, crackdown on Jamia Millia Islamia
  • Protests spread to other Indian cities including Hyderabad, Varanasi, Kolkata, Punducherry, Lucknow and Mumbai

Indian Capital is in a state of absolute unrest, as protests ignited by the passing of contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) spillover from the Jamia Millia Islamia to universities across the country. Dehli police, brutally tackled the protesting students of Jamia on Sunday evening. From tear gas explosions to baton charges, unfounded police brutality led to almost 6 casualties.

CAB, like the approval of Article 370 is Modi government’s another vindictive, anti-Muslim, anti-secularist, Fascist, thinly veiled Hindutva propaganda to shred the secularist Indian narrative, and superimpose the Hindu nationalist ideology over Indian conscience.

The tension escalated when police forcefully entered the Aligarh Muslim University campus the very evening and detained students, who were protesting against the violence at Jamia Millia Islamia.

Protests have spread to other Indian cities including Hyderabad, Varanasi, Kolkata, Punducherry, Lucknow and Mumbai, as students left homes to register their protest against police brutality. In Delhi, hundreds of people gathered outside the New Delhi Police headquarters on call from Jawaharlal Nehru University students.

On Monday students from Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur and several other cities have boycotted class in a show of solidarity with their peers from Jamia.

It seems Modi’s obsession with using religion to further his political agendas knows no bounds. Passing a bill which makes religion a basis for citizenship, while simultaneously, discrediting and disregarding Muslims is a perfect addition to Modi establishment’s repertoire.

People taking to roads is a clear sign that Indian public is no longer willing to bear Modi government’s discriminatory rhetoric.

Under the new law passed earlier this month, religious minorities from neighboring Muslim-majority countries who have settled in India prior to 2015, on the grounds of persecution. However, Muslim immigrants are not taken into consideration one bit.

Over a 100 students were wounded in the Sunday night protest as police charged, unleashed, through the Jamia doors. In a news conference, Najma Akhtar demanded an investigation into how police were allowed to enter the campus. “It is not expected of the police to enter the university and beat up students” she told in the conference.

At present students and members of civil society have taken to roads to show their collective dismay over government policies. Some protesters are equating the Modi government with the totalitarian Nazi Regime.
