Innovative Pedagogy Takes Center Stage at IIUI Workshop

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) at the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI), played host to a dynamic one-day workshop on “Curriculum Development Through Project-Based Learning and CDIO.” The event, organized with the support of the Pak-UK Education Gateway Mobility Partnership grant, in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, and the British Council Pakistan, brought together prominent figures from academia.

Faculty members from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, FET IIUI, including Dr Adnan Aslam Noon, Dr Javed Ahmed Khan Tipu, Dr Muhammad Arif, Engr Asad Asghar Janjua, Engr Mohsin Iftikhar, and Engr Muhammad Asif, spearheaded the workshop. Notably, participants hailed from thirty universities across Pakistan, emphasizing the widespread interest in advancing engineering pedagogy.

The workshop explored various facets of engineering education, focusing on key themes:

1. Curriculum Design using Project-Based Learning
2. Conceive, Design, Implement, and Operate (CDIO)
3. Examples and Success Stories of CDIO
4. Higher Education Degree Apprenticeship
5. CDIO – an Active-Based Session using LEGO

Distinguished keynote speakers, including Dr Gareth Andrew from Aston University, Dr Tabbi Wilberforce Awotwe from King’s College London, Dr Taqi Ahmed Cheema from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI), Dr Freeha Azmat from the University of Warwick, and Dr Sarah Junaid from Aston University, shared their expertise and insights.

The event’s highlight was a panel discussion featuring esteemed experts in the field, including Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid, Rector GIKI, Prof Dr Attaullah Shah, Vice-Chancellor Karakoram International University, Prof Dr Muhammad Tufail, Pro Vice Chancellor NED University of Engineering & Technology, Prof Dr  Muhammad Abid, Director Comsats University Wah Campus, Engr Niaz Ahmed, Additional Registrar Pakistan Engineering Council, Dr Sarah Junaid, Aston University, Dr Tabbi Wilberforce Awotwe, King’s College London.

Prof Dr Nadeem Ahmed Sheikh, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at IIUI, adeptly moderated the engaging panel discussion. The workshop concluded with a ceremony where Dr Fazal Ahmad Khaliq, Rector GIKI, served as the esteemed chief guest, distributing shields and certificates to the participants, marking the success of this collaborative initiative to enhance engineering education in Pakistan.
