International Award for Dr Atta Ur Rahman

Renowned scientist, advisor to Prime Minister on Science & Technology and Founding Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan Dr Atta Ur Rahman would receive the ‘China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award 2020’ from Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Peoples Hall in Beijing on January 10.

The China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award is the highest scientific award of China conferred on foreign individuals or organizations who had made an important contribution to China’s scientific and technological development.

Dr Atta Ur Rahman has been conferred this award in recognition of his contributions in the field of chemistry and the numerous strong collaborations that he has developed with China in the fields of organic chemistry, genetics, pharmacology, agricultural sciences, virology, nanotechnology and other emerging areas.

Dr Rahman would be the first Pakistani to receive the award. Previous awardees include scientists from US, German, Japan, UK, India and many other countries.

Prof Rahman is the most decorated scientist of Pakistan having many laurels under his name including Tamgha e Imtiaz, Sitara e Imtiaz, Hilal e Imtiaz and the highest national award Nishan e Imtiaz.

The applauded scientist obtained his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Cambridge in 1968 and since then has been serving education and science.
