DEPRESSION ON THE RISE

Nine out of 10 individuals suffer from depression and this rate is much higher in students now-a-days as students are the most vulnerable segment of the society. But let us first understand what the term depression is. Some use it in the right way, some use it in the wrong way.

However. there are two types of depression. The first type is biological depression. which is biological as the term suggests. People suffering from biological depression are naturally prone to depressing thoughts and feel sad for no reason. At times, such individuals would suffer from an unexplained stomach issue or chest infection. This is depression as a disorder of biological makeup. The other important aspect I would like to point out and we can do a lot about to help such individuals is depression as a reaction to circumstances. This involves the individual’s inability to cope with difficult situations in life. This is the type of depression most people have and this is something they can definitely do something about This involves functional disruption like slowing down, sleep deprivation, loss of appetite, feeling lazy. restlessness and worrying about a particular situation a person is in. But all these are a phase and a temporary reaction to a situation.

If something does not happen as we would expect it to be, we tend to get depressed. Like say. we lost 500 rupees that day. we will end up feeling that loss by feeling sad or stressing about it and have an involuntary discussion with yourself. Life is like that There are ups and down but how we do we deal with it. But most times it is a natural reaction. losing a person close passes away and try to act normal is not normal. As a rule . one should feel grief, feel mad even . but if we do not should display such emotions, in a month’s time or may be an year later. the break down in inevitable. There are some normal reactions and some natural reactions. But because of the age and stage. students are thrown in a deep end, they do not have the skill nor the resources and due to the lack of understanding in the educational intuitions, they do not even realize it that the students can be under so much stress. The pressure to meet deadlines and maintain grades by each passing year slowly starts to take a form of depression and by the time the final year approaches, the pressure is already on to secure a stable job. This is what I would say this ‘depression on the rise’. If we cannot find solutions for our problems then we tend to get depressed.

Now, there are so many unreported cases of suicide and attempted suicide, there are no exact facts and figures on it Attempted suicide is a desperate attempt to solve a problem but it is the wrong solution. Depression is a reaction to our socio-cultural circumstances as well and students are prone to depression due to multiple reasons which we cannot seem to cope with. Nothing is more depressing than injustice Unfortunately the environment of our country is such that we are surrounded with depression in all forms. Student must find constructive ways to fight depression and seek help despite their gender. Educational institutions must ensure that they not only provide their students with education but equip them with the right skills to face life after their studies. Their role in fighting depression is students must be met by offering counseling services. This I would say. is like investing for the future. Unfortunately. our education system fails them. Students are very precious. They are the architects and would make or break a country. It is the responsibility of the teachers to take care of the students and fighting depression is something that we can help.

Sometimes you get better, regress, then get better again as this positive depression quote points out: “Healing is not linear.” Never underestimate the power of positivist when living with a mental illness.
