In a heartfelt tribute to the esteemed services of Nawab Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi V, the last ruler of the Bahawalpur State, a commemorative ceremony was held at Ghulam Muhammad Ghotvi Hall, Abbasia Campus, Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB). The event marked the 58th death anniversary of Nawab Sir Sadiq, lauding his contributions to education, health, infrastructure, and the promotion of democratic values.

In his address, Chatta expressed his delight at the university’s efforts to honor a humanitarian and an education-friendly personality. “I am extremely happy that the Islamia University of Bahawalpur is paying tribute to a humanitarian and education-friendly personality,” he said. “I had read a lot about Nawab Sahib and the state of Bahawalpur, but being here and witnessing his services practically has been enlightening. Nawab Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi is a great benefactor of Pakistan, and great nations remember their benefactors.”
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Naveed Akhtar highlighted Nawab Sir Sadiq’s visionary contributions, noting that the foundation of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur was a testament to his dedication to education. “From Madrasa Uloom Diniyat to Jamia Abbasia and then Jamia Islamia, today the Islamia University of Bahawalpur stands as the building of his dream,” Prof. Dr. Akhtar remarked. He also recounted Nawab Sahib’s substantial support to the national treasury at Pakistan’s inception and his defense support to the nascent country, including providing palaces for governmental use.
Prof. Dr. Musawar Hussain Bukhari provided an in-depth overview of Nawab Sir Sadiq’s historical measures during his reign, emphasizing the legacy he left behind. Dr. Samia Khalid, Chairperson of the Department of History, Dr. Muhammad Tahir, Retired Professor of Government S.E. College Bahawalpur, and Dr. Rubina Yasmin, Chairperson of the Department of Pakistan Studies, also spoke at the event, reflecting on the Nawab’s profound impact.
The university announced the establishment of the Sadiq Chair to further honor Nawab Sir Sadiq’s legacy and continue his mission of promoting education. Prof. Dr. Rubina Bhatti, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Muhammad Shaji ur Rahman, Registrar, Dr. Adnan Bukhari, Additional Director of Students Affairs, Dr. Usman Cheema, Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. Shahzad Ahmed Khalid, Director of Media and Public Relations, were among the notable attendees along with faculty members and students.
The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of Nawab Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi V’s enduring legacy and his significant contributions to the development of Bahawalpur and Pakistan.
