Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman has warned the PPP government in Sindh over what he called a conspiracy against the historical Dayaram Jethamal Sindh Government Science College (DJ Science College) to encroach upon its building.

The JI leader here on Wednesday expressed grave concerns over a steep decline in admissions to the college, construction work in the heritage building for government offices and a shortage of teachers as well as classrooms in the educational institute.

He dubbed the reported developments as nefarious designs by the PPP government in Sindh against education in the city to fulfill the greed of party leadership for land and resources.

On the occasion, he vowed not to let the PPP’s provincial government successful in its designs and announced to resist against the move and hold strong protest against the ongoing attempts to encroach upon the DJ Science College’s historical building.

He said that the college is one of the famous educational institutes not only in Karachi but across the country. He added that the college’s building is considered a national heritage site due to its beautiful historical design.

The PPP government in Sindh has initiated construction work in the college building to establish offices of other departments, creating a shortage of space for classes, he highlighted.

Engr Naeem Ur Rehman also highlighted that hundreds of brilliant students were offered admission in this historical educational institute every year, whereas this year the number of admissions were reduced by 85 percent — indicating a very clear pattern to collapse the college in order to grab the building.

He said that the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) as well as the Students Action Committee of the college have already expressed grave concerns over the situation and highlighted the wrongdoings on part of the government.

The JI leader said that the PPP government has been ruling over the province for the past one and half decades but it did nothing for the progress and development of Karachi, instead the government ruined all public sector departments in general and the education sector in particular.

The PPP government in the province has also resorted to ruin the last few educational institutes in the city that offer quality education, he said.

He also highlighted that the DJ Science college has a hostel as well with a capacity to accommodate 200 students. However, he continued, the college has been deprived of the hostel for ages.

He said the college, established in 1887, has been serving for more than 130 years. The college is alma mater to Sinch Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah himself along with a lone list of designators, ranging from nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, Ghulam Hussain Hidayatullah, former president of Bangladesh Ziaur Rehman, nuclear scientist Dr Badarul Islam, and several others including NASA scientists, chiefs of army staff and prominent politicians.
