The Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) held its 4th convocation at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Ground on Sunday to award degrees to over 630 successful graduates.

Forty medals were awarded to the best graduates and position holders of batch 2020 and 2021, out of which female students secured 24 medals. Saif Aslam Khan, a BDS student, received four medals for his exceptional performance.

After distributing the medals to the position holders, Governor Sindh / Chancellor Kamran Khan Tessori, the chief guest of the JSMU 4th Convocation, addressed the students and asked them to respect and take good care of their parents and teachers who made them able to get this degree.

“There is a lot of talent in Pakistan and Pakistani youth are making the country proud all over the world”, he added. Governor Sindh asked young people to consider Pakistan as their home and decorate it like their drawing room.

Minister Universities and Boards Ismail Rahu awarded degrees to graduates. In his speech, he asked the graduates to be true to their motherland and serve humanity with passion. He stressed on the importance Sindh Government attached to the education sector and pledged his support for educational projects in the province.

Speaking at the convocation, JSMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon shed light on the milestones the university has achieved in recent years and shared that the JSMU is at the forefront of public universities having been declared the best among the medical universities of Sindh in the UK’s Times Higher Education Impact Ranking for 2022. “JSMU is working on sustainable strategies and programs to provide modern and relevant health education in the province of Sindh,” the Vice Chancellor said.

He also shared his vision for the establishment of Jinnah Sindh Medical City and further briefed about the various projects that JSMU is currently working on, including the establishment of a boys’ medical college, the School of Nursing, the acquisition of SESSI’s Valika hospital in Landhi, the establishment of the College of Physical Therapy, and collaboration with JPMC. Talking about Jinnah Sindh Medical City, he highlighted the University’s need for space for expansion of the current facilities including the hostels. He stressed the need for better lodgings for foreign students that come to JSMU.

Prof Imrana Khan, the chairperson of the JSMU 4th convocation committee also addressed the event. Registrar Dr Azam Khan performed the oath-taking ceremony.

The best graduate for MBBS 2020 was Aliza Zakaria and Amna Khan for MBBS 2021. Aleene Saleem was the best graduate of BDS year 2020 and Saif Aslam Khan for year 2021. Alina Rizvi and Ramsha Riaz received the best graduate title in the Pharm D discipline for the years of 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Alyna Hafeez secured gold medal for honors in Basic Medical Sciences for year 2020 and Faraz Hassan Kazmi for the year 2021. Sehrish Aijaz secured a Gold medal for honors in Basic Dental Sciences in the year of 2020 and Saif Aslam khan for the year of 2021.

Alyna Hafeez (MBBS year 2020), Muhammad Ali (MBBS year 2021), Syeda Farwa Abbas (BDS year 2020), Saif Aslam Khan (BDS year 2021), Sheikh Muhammad Saad (Pharm D year 2020) and Anusha Shafi (Pharm D year 2021) received gold medals for securing first positions.

Other gold medal recipients for the Position in only Final Year were Madiha Sattar (MBBS year 2020), Muhammad Usman Ghani (MBBS year 2021), Muhammad Ali (MBBS year 2021), Laiba Amin (BDS year 2020) and Saif Aslam Khan (BDS year 2021). In addition, Bronze and Silver medals were also given for securing the second and third positions in MBBS, BDS and Pharm D.

Eight certificates were distributed among the best graduates of MBA, EMBA, MHPE and MSPH disciplines. Former DG Health KMC Dr Birbal Genani and his daughter Sapna Kumari received degrees simultaneously in the convocation.

Former VC LUMHS Dr Naushad Sheikh, Haji Hanif Tayyab, Provincial Assembly Member Dr Lal Chand Ukrani, Dr Nighat Shah, Dr Nusrat Shah, Dr Anita Shah, Vice Chancellor’s wife Anisa Amjad and faculty of JSMU were present in the convocation.

In the end, Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Shahid Rasool delivered vote of thanks to the guests. During the program, a documentary on the work of JSMU was also screened.
