Sharia Appellate Bench ad hoc judge, Qibla Ayaz, has called on Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, to take notice of alleged mismanagement and irregularities at the International Islamic University (IIU) in Islamabad. The appeal was made in a formal letter, as reported by 24NewsHD TV on Friday.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! In his letter, Ayaz expressed serious concerns about the performance of the university’s Acting Rector, Dr Mukhtar Ahmed. Initially appointed to improve the institution’s educational and administrative standards, Dr Ahmed has reportedly failed to deliver on these expectations, with Ayaz alleging that the university’s affairs have deteriorated under his leadership.
Among the issues highlighted in the letter was the lack of proper documentation of the minutes from the Board of Governors’ meetings. This failure, Ayaz suggested, reflects poorly on the university’s governance and transparency. Additionally, he noted that the upcoming Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a decision that has drawn criticism given the potential implications for the university’s leadership.
Ayaz raised concerns that there may be attempts to elect a new university president during the Jeddah meeting, despite a Supreme Court ruling that could potentially restrict such actions. He cautioned that this development could exacerbate the challenges facing the university.
The judge urged the Chief Justice, who is also a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, to take immediate steps to investigate the situation. He recommended that the Chief Justice request a comprehensive report on the current state of affairs at IIU to address the ongoing issues and ensure accountability.
The International Islamic University Islamabad, one of Pakistan’s leading higher education institutions, has faced criticism in recent years for administrative inefficiencies and governance issues. The institution, which serves as a hub for Islamic education and research, plays a pivotal role in the country’s academic and cultural landscape. However, recurring allegations of mismanagement have cast a shadow over its reputation.
This latest call for intervention underscores the growing concern among stakeholders about the university’s trajectory. Observers say that swift action by the Chief Justice could help restore trust in the institution and set it on a path toward reform. As of now, there has been no official response from either the Chief Justice or the university administration regarding the concerns raised by Qibla Ayaz.
