To spread awareness about the importance of literacy and its significance in life and society, A seminar was conducted under the theme of “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces” at the Kinnaird Centre for Learning and Cultural Development, Kinnaird College for Women on the Occasion of International Literacy Day.
Participants discussed the learning Opportunities and Ideas to Transform the Literacy Learning Spaces and develop sustainable learning resources.
Rizwan Anwar, United Nations Global Youth Ambassador on Sustainable Development Goals, Said: “It will be an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all to align our efforts and activities with United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda as Literacy is also a driver for sustainable development in that it enables greater participation in the labor market; improved child and family health and nutrition; reduces poverty and expands life opportunities.”
Director of Kinnaird Centre for Learning and Cultural Development Ms. Maha Jamil adds, “In the aftermath of the pandemic, nearly 24 million learners might never return to formal education, out of which 11 million are projected to be girls and young women. To ensure no one is left behind, we need to enrich and transform the existing learning spaces through an integrated approach and enable literacy learning in the perspective of lifelong learning.”
Principal Kinnaird College for Women Dr. Rukhsana David Said, “Literacy empowers individuals and societies at large and helps people to improve their standard of living and holistically lead a better life; Kinnaird has been empowering Women since 1913 and will continue imparting quality education to empower women and young girls to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 04 of Quality Education.”
In 1966, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) marked September 8 as Literacy Day. Since 1967, this particular day has been celebrated to highlight the importance of literacy and how it can help individuals, communities, and societies.
