The Department of Gender and Development Studies at Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), under the supervision of Dr Uzma Ashiq Khan, organized an impactful seminar and poster competition titled “Let’s Join Hands to End the Harmful Practices of Child Marriage.” The event was held in collaboration with the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), Group Development Pakistan (GDP), Bardasht Organization and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The seminar brought together a diverse group of participants, including Ms Nilofer Bakhtiar, Chairperson of the NCSW, who graced the event as the Guest of Honor. Prof Dr Muhammad Afzal, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at LCWU, was also present, along with representatives from the collaborative organizations, legal professionals, department heads, faculty members, and students.

In her opening remarks, Dr Uzma Ashiq Khan emphasized the critical need to address the issue of child marriage, which continues to undermine the rights and development of young girls in Pakistan. She highlighted the importance of collective efforts and community engagement in eradicating this practice.

Ms Nilofer Bakhtiar delivered an inspiring keynote speech, stressing the role of education and policy enforcement in preventing child marriages. She praised the collaborative effort and underscored the significance of such events in raising awareness and fostering a dialogue on gender rights.

Prof Dr Muhammad Afzal commended the Department of Gender and Development Studies for organizing the event and reiterated the university’s commitment to promoting gender equality and social justice. He encouraged students to actively participate in initiatives that aim to create a safer and more equitable society.

The seminar featured presentations from various experts who discussed the legal, social, and psychological impacts of child marriage. Interactive sessions allowed participants to share their perspectives and propose solutions to tackle this pervasive issue.

The poster competition, a highlight of the event, showcased the creativity and commitment of students in advocating against child marriage. Participants presented powerful visual messages that captured the urgency and importance of ending this harmful practice. Winners of the competition were awarded certificates and recognition for their efforts.

Prof Dr Shagufta Naz, Vice Chancellor of LCWU, expressed her pride in the successful execution of the event. She acknowledged the dynamic leadership and dedication of Dr Uzma and her team, as well as the valuable contributions of the collaborative partners. Dr Naz reiterated LCWU’s pledge to continue supporting initiatives that empower women and protect their rights.

The event concluded with a renewed call to action, urging all attendees to join hands and work towards a future where child marriage is eradicated, and every girl has the opportunity to thrive and achieve her full potential.
