Department of Economics at the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) organized a Pre-Budget Seminar at Iqra Auditorium. The guest speakers of this event were Mr. Ali Kemal, Chief of SDG, Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiative, GoP; Mr. Kashif Anwar, President Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industries (LCCI) and Prof. Dr. Hafiz Pasha, former Finance Minister and Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Beaconhouse National University (BNU) Lahore.
The Chairperson Department of Economics and Dean FASS welcomed the honurable guests and said that conducting Pre-Budget Seminar is a constant feature of Department of Economics, LCWU. Absorption of youth should be top priority in the budget. Speakers shed light on current economic issues and their potential solutions.
Mr. Ali Kemal highlighted the economic challenges and advocated for a reassessment of priorities, including removal of anti-export biases and hidden subsidies. He emphasized the imperative of prioritizing economic growth and fostering an environment conducive to business development, while Mr. Kashif Anwar emphasized the necessity of structural changes within FBR and stressed the need to file taxes. He also highlighted the need to foster business-friendly environment for the private sector. Lack of continuity and consistency is the main hurdle in the way of growth of industry and hence economy.
The Chief Guest Prof. Dr.Hafiz Pasha, highlighted the shift in government spending priorities towards debt servicing over development expenditures. He advocated the need to put the education sector on top priority to nurture human capital creation without which growth is not possible. He also urged taxation reforms, particularly targeting agricultural elites. It is high time for elites to contribute other wise all will miss the train.
Worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr. Shagufta Naz underscored the importance of guiding youth towards digital skills and entrepreneurship, aligning with global opportunities. She urged for policies enabling tax exemptions on foreign earnings for youth, aiming to encourage and empower them, thereby fostering economic growth.
The Registrar Mr. Babar Ali Khan and Treasurer Mr. Younis Jatoi grace the event with their presence. Dr.Hafsah Batool and Ms. Duryab were moderators of the event. The event concluded with the distribution of shields among the honorable Guest and Speakers.
