The Department of Gender & Development Studies, Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) in collaboration with WaterAid and Muslim Hands celebrated women hygiene day at LCWU.
The main purpose of this event was to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene by highlighting the myths about menstruation.
On this occasion, Vice-Chancellor Lahore College for Women University, Prof Dr. Bushra Mirza said, neglecting menstruation hygiene may cause health problems in the future for girls, that’s why it is important to guide young girls about it, so that they can experience this natural process, not as a barrier to their growth. We all should join hands in the journey of empowering women by proving them facilities and authentic knowledge about their reproductive health, she said.
In this event, WaterAid launched a compendium and video documentary on girls and women-friendly toilets, that will guide, government departments, the private sector, and civil society organizations in designing/ upgrading girls/ women-friendly toilets in their respective institutions/ organizations. WaterAid also shared a video documentary on “Her Hygiene Matters”, that highlights the role of MHM champions in creating awareness among people at the grassroots level.
Representative from WaterAid Mr. Munawar Hassan discussed that Menstrual hygiene has become a topic which can now be discussed which was very difficult a decade ago, despite being a natural process this has been a taboo for society in general and women in particular. This has a severe effect on their mobility and confidence. WaterAid advocates for integration of Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) education into government policies, and ensuring access of women and girls to gender friendly toilets in offices, schools/ healthcare facilities and public places.
Regional Director form Muslim Hands Mr. Khalid Qureshi emphasized on the inclusion of Menstrual Hygiene in curriculum of secondary level of girls’ education. He also advised to senior students to share their experiences with adolescents girls of their families to avoid further complications their menstrual cycle.
Dean of Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal appreciated the efforts of WaterAid, Muslim Hands and Department of Gender and Department Studies for highlighting the importance of menstruation health and hygiene.
Dr. Uzma Ashiq, in charge Gender and Development Studies, LCWU expressed her gratitude to all administration of Lahore College for Women University, WaterAid and Muslim Hands for their support and collaboration in organizing this event.
This event was attended by the senior faculty of Lahore College for Women University, representative from various NGOs and government departments.
In this regard, students of Gender and Development Studies dept participated in the competition and displayed their projects on promoting menstrual health and hygiene.
