A groundbreaking project aimed at developing leadership skills among female students was launched at the University of Home Economics (UHE) Lahore in collaboration with Idea Think Tank. This initiative is part of the Strengthening Women Development Centers program established in public universities, designed to empower young women and enhance their role in Pakistan’s socio-economic development.
The inauguration event was graced by prominent guests, including US Consul General Christine Hawkins, Punjab Minister of Higher Education Rana Sikandar Hayat, Vice-Chancellor UHE Prof Dr Faleeha Zahra Kazmi, senior journalist Salman Ghani, Director of Idea Think Tank Salman Abid, Dr Raa’na Malik, Dr Asif Munir, as well as faculty members and students.
The project will offer specialized leadership training to students from four universities, including UHE Lahore, with the goal of equipping female students with essential skills to lead and innovate in their fields. During his address, Rana Sikandar Hayat highlighted that female students consistently outperform in matriculation and intermediate exams and announced the government’s plan to distribute 40,000 laptops to students next month. He also stressed the importance of Women Development Centers in universities, noting that they are crucial for fostering the talents and skills of female students.
Prof Dr Faleeha Zahra Kazmi reiterated UHE’s commitment to the professional growth of its students. She stated that the Women Development Center at UHE is providing internships to students, helping them gain practical experience to complement their academic education.
Addressing the audience, US Consul General Christine Hawkins expressed her support for initiatives that advance women’s development. She announced that the US is offering scholarships for Masters and PhD programs to Pakistani students and emphasized the critical role of women in social development, reaffirming the United States’ commitment to supporting women’s advancement in Pakistan.
Senior journalist Salman Ghani also shared his views, highlighting the substantial contributions women are making in all sectors across Pakistan. He emphasized that for Pakistan to achieve progress and prosperity, it must place equal trust in its women and men.
Director of Idea Think Tank Salman Abid outlined the project’s first phase, which will involve selecting 25 female students from each of the four participating universities based on merit. These students will undergo a six-month training program focused on leadership development. He praised the active role of UHE’s Women Development Center in supporting and fostering the professional growth of its students.
The project is set to be a catalyst for change, providing young women with the tools and confidence to become leaders in their communities and beyond. The collaboration between academia, government, and international partners underscores a collective effort to invest in the future of Pakistan’s women, paving the way for a more inclusive and progressive society.
